Courage to Risk

“Don't be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”

I wasn't always a risk taker. As a child I was more a "take it safe" kind of girl.  This started to really change in high school when I went on trips to Europe, flourished when I left home to go to University, and was really fostered when I took a "risk taker" teaching module at Simon Fraser University.

During my teaching degree we often explored ways we could create an environment in which children would be able to take risks, and feel comfortable to try new things.  We even put ourselves in situations, such as a high ropes challenge course, where we had to put our theory to the test.  This idea of risk taking has lingered with me well into my adult years.

As we start into a new school year, it might be worth asking the questions, "What can we be doing to create an environment where our children are willing to take a risk, go outside the box, and try new things?"

Have a great week!
